Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

Our questions and answers provide just some of the advice to help you enjoy this game more, and then you can continue to learn as you gain experience. The official Carom3D web site has numerous forums that you should explore, too.

Q: What advice would you give if your web site was just one sentence?
A: Enjoy the game, have fun first, lose with dignity, and don't curse or cheat.

Q: If this is all free, why should I spend money for chalks?
A: Chalk, the Carom3D currency, allows you to enter tournaments, buy great looking custom cue sticks, add a profile graphic to your blog, and other enhancements. Income is also an incentive for continuous improvement by Carom3D and the parent company, NeoAct.

Q: What are the advantages of joining a guild?
A: A guild is often cross-cultured with members from all over the globe, so it's an opportunity to learn more about people 1000's of miles away. A few more advantages are easy communication, visibility of members coming and going, and friends for team play.

Q: Why don't you have advice for how to aim, game strategy, or winning?
A: Skill is inherent, and our purpose is to help you get started with basic information. Your game should improve with experience, and that takes time. Pointers are given by Carom3D, so use the Playing Game link on the left of this page to see their advice. Advanced techniques may be added at a later date.

Q: Why do most players have 1000 next to their ID, and others higher numbers?
A: 1000 is the default rating. In the past, you received rating for every game you won. Now the only way to get rating is play in the Ranking Server. Your win-loss adds up, however, you don't get points towards advancing to the next level, so most players don't care about rating any more. All rating is reset to 1000 every 3 months.

Q: Was it a cheat when I shot and the object ball was floating over the pocket?
A: No, this zero gravity phenomenon is in the software and not caused by your opponent. Some bugs are more serious and get immediate attention by NeoAct. The floating ball is annoying, but may never go away. People have reported balls going OFF the table.

Q: Is there any way to adjust or remove some of the sound effects like the music?
A: Yes. While in a game, press the ESC key and look for the box next to BGM and click it to stop the background music. Sound volume and other commands are available from the lobby in the drop down menu below the chat box.

Q: Will you be adding pages to this site as you get more input from players?
A: Perhaps. The intent is to give new players very basic advice based on more than 2 years experience. There are no plans for expansion in the immediate future.
